Carolina
Ok, we are officially back from North Carolina. I have to say, this was one of the best trips I've been on. I have lots of pics! We left early thursday morning, and on 3 hours of sleep, the whole road seemed crazy and too fast for me. I dozed in and out of sleep, and once we hit the foothills, I finally woke up (slightly).

Here's a view from the road between Knoxville and Asheville. There were tunnels!
When we finally hit Asheville, we found a crappy hotel and tried to get some good rest.

We woke up the next morning and headed out to Tsali! Here is a view from the car, of the clouds making big ole shadows on the mountains.

Us getting hyped on the way!

We are finally there! I love the old national forest signs. they sure do rock.

Here is a black snake right in the middle of the trail. The trails at Tsali are great. If you use em right, they are like constant rollercoaster type trails. Smooth and rolling and downhill. Even climbing is pretty easy, since they have berms to roll some speed into the uphill. There are a few jangly rocky sections, but thats about it.

Here is a view off the trail into the lake and across to the mountains. There were actually houses on this lake, believe it or not!

Taking advantage of an overlook area!

Me and trail and bikes.

So we rode about 3-4 hours, and then luck hit when we cruised the campsite one more time to check for an available spot. It was so nice to camp here, there were nothing but mountain bikers in most every spot. I even fell asleep to the sounds of a whippoorwill and a guy who sounded exactly like neil young on a guitar. Even the voice was spot on. There's me cookin' up some pasta and corn on the cob!

We woke up the next morning to rain! Remember yesterday? Sunny, clear, etc? We got treated to some real Smokey Mountains this day. Here was our drive across Blue Ridge Parkway towards Pisgah National Forest.

Here's another shot. This shot here was by far the worst fog of it all. To give you background, in most parts on the parkway, you are on a complete ridge, with nothing next to you on either side. So what we should be seeing is views of valleys and mountains next to us. Instead we had the eternal abyss. They don't call em the smokies for nothin.

The highest point we reached was 6,000. Here is where the fog was finally clearing up a little. There were pretty pink flowers surrounding us in the valley and in the rocks above us.

Another valley shot.
So we finally reached Pisgah, and found a great trail to ride. It was called the Avery trail, and lemme tell you, im surprised that I did this thing! We had to climb up a dirt road for about 30-40 minutes, then reached the trail head. That was another 30 minutes of climbing, except that we had to carry our bikes too. It was so rocky and rooty and beautiful though. I wished I had taken time to get pictures, but it was a lot of work to get up the trail. Then when we peaked, we realized we had 50 minutes of descending. About 1200 feet of it. About 2 feet wide of trail, filled with rocks and roots and boulders of every kind. Drops, intense curves, etc. It was truly the best trail I had ridden EVER. When we started to level off a little, the trail turned from more dusty and rocky to more rainforesty. It was dark, and creeks, and vast views of cloudy hazy trees and small fields. The trail here was slightly muddy, and there were tons of log crossings. It was so great. Something really interesting about the dirt in North Carolina is that is it really glimmery. I had a huge mud splash on my leg and realized that when i flattened the dirt out, it was just like glitter. Amazing. Our tent is filled with glitter too.

Here are some shots of the depraved drive to hotelness. Read ahead, youll see.
After riding, and being amazed, we decided to just keep going and try to find a place to stay. We didnt want to camp, we hadnt had a shower in 2 days, and were hungry. We headed out to Asheville again, and from about 6-12am, we had a huge desperate search for a hotel. It was Memorial day weekend, people everywhere, takin our hotel rooms. Well we got to find food in Asheville, but no place to stay. So we ended up driving all the way to Tennessee, and finally, when we were about to give up and just sleep in the car, we found the best comfort inn in the world. AND they had 1 available non smoking room. woot. it was the best sleep i ever had.
We thought we were going to head on to Kentucky and do some riding and camping there, but after seeing the weather forecast for Monday, we decided it was better to just head home and relax an extra day, and get all our unpacking done.

Hooray. Back to Chicago.

And lucky we were to get home when we did. It rained our whole route all day Monday!

And Slammer was sure happy to be home!
